How Often Should You Clean Your Oven?

It is one of those jobs that is easy to put off. The oven looks fine, it still works, and there are always more pressing things to do. But leaving your oven uncleaned for too long can cause real problems — from poor cooking performance to unpleasant smells and even fire risks.

So how often should you actually clean your oven? The honest answer depends on how much you use it, but here is a practical guide.

The General Rule of Thumb

For a household that uses the oven three to five times a week, a thorough deep clean every three to six months is a sensible target. If you cook daily or do a lot of roasting, you may need to clean it more frequently — every two to three months.

Light users — perhaps cooking once or twice a week — can get away with a deep clean once or twice a year, provided they wipe up spills promptly.

Why Regular Cleaning Matters

Cooking Performance

Grease and carbon build-up on the oven walls, floor and elements acts as an insulator. This means your oven has to work harder to reach and maintain temperature, which can lead to uneven cooking and longer preheat times.

Smoke and Smells

Burnt-on grease produces smoke every time you heat the oven. Over time this can taint the flavour of your food and fill your kitchen with unpleasant odours. If your oven smokes even at moderate temperatures, it is a clear sign it needs attention.

Fire Risk

A heavily soiled oven — particularly one with grease pooled on the floor or around the elements — is a genuine fire hazard. Grease can ignite at high temperatures, especially when cooking at 200°C or above.

Efficiency and Running Costs

A dirty oven uses more energy to do the same job. Keeping it clean is a simple way to reduce your energy bills, particularly with the cost of electricity as high as it is.

Warning Signs Your Oven Is Overdue a Clean

  • Visible smoke when preheating or cooking
  • A persistent burnt smell even when the oven is empty
  • Uneven cooking results — food browning on one side but not the other
  • Grease pooling on the oven floor
  • The oven door glass is so dirty you cannot see inside
  • Cooking times seem longer than they used to be

If you are experiencing any of these, it is time to book a professional clean rather than waiting for your next scheduled one.

Between Deep Cleans: What You Can Do

You do not need to deep clean after every use, but a few simple habits will keep your oven in much better condition between professional cleans:

Wipe up spills immediately. Once the oven has cooled, wipe up any spills or splashes with a damp cloth. Fresh spills are far easier to remove than baked-on ones.

Use a roasting tray or oven liner. Placing a tray on the shelf below a roasting joint catches drips before they hit the oven floor.

Remove and clean the shelves regularly. Oven shelves can be soaked in hot soapy water and scrubbed clean — this takes far less effort than tackling the whole oven.

Check the door seal. A damaged door seal lets heat escape and can cause grease to accumulate around the door frame.

Professional Cleaning vs DIY

DIY oven cleaning products can be effective for light soiling, but they often involve harsh chemicals, strong fumes and a lot of elbow grease. For heavily soiled ovens — or if you simply do not want the hassle — a professional clean is well worth the investment.

A professional oven cleaner uses specialist equipment and non-caustic, eco-friendly products to remove grease, carbon and burnt-on food from every part of the oven, including the door glass, shelves, side runners and elements. The results are typically far better than anything achievable with a supermarket spray.
